Evaluation- Media Technologies
How did you use media technologies in the construction, research/planning and evaluation stages?
During the evaluation stages, Prezi has been used as a different program used to display the evaluation questions and answers. Prezi is a unique program to present work, in an interesting format. Unlike powerpoint, Prezi allows the presenter to create their own pathways, keeping the audiences attention as it can zooms and moves to the next slide. This form of media technology can be accessed on a number of devices, making it easily shared.
Sony Vegas Pro was the software which was downloaded, enabling us as a group to edit and create our music video. Using this program, we were able to add filters to the original clips, giving the video a vintage theme. This style of filter was used to mask any imperfections, which occurred when filming, along with the idea that it creates a warm atmosphere, representing a stereotypical love story, which is being portrayed during the flashbacks shown in the music video.
The challenging part when forming our music video, was joining the different camera angles and shots together, getting them to successfully fit in time with the lead singers lip-syncing and the non digetic sound of the song, Use somebody.
In the creating of our product we have used media technologies through the research/planning and the construction. During the research stages, we used the program Youtube, to view others music videos and the main video of Use Somebody by Kings of Leon. This was helpful when looking into the conventions used within real music videos, including what they feature, the type of effects used and common narratives. When researching into what appears in a music video, it was discovered that many reflect the lyrics, and also include a storyline, often relating to love. We have portrayed this in our music video by giving the impression that the main singer is thinking/singing about the female, who is shown in parts of the video, representing flashbacks of a memory. Youtube enabled a useful way to anazlys music videos and discover what target aundeince of an alternative rock genre look for.
Youtube is one of the programs used in the evaluation stages to show the audience feedback, interviewing teachers that have watched our music video.
Other media technologies which have had an impact on the construction of our media product is Photoshop. This was used in the creation of the digipack to create a suitable product which represents The New Age band. Using various edits, the poster and CD cover have been created, keeping a consist and theme of black, white and red. This consistancy reflects a professional style making the the band noticeable, and creates familiarity for the target audience.
Online media has been used to promote our music video, these being programs such as Twitter and Facebook. The reason behind using these forms of social networking sites is due to the music videos target audience of 16-30, and how these program's are easily accessible on a single device. These program's are used in the promotion of real bands to share news about incoming events etc. Social networking is a quick inexpensive way of promotion, which is used globally, saving money which before the wide use of the internet would be

Evaluation- Forms and Conventions
Evaluation
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Our media product, uses forms and conventions of real media products. In relation to professional music videos, we have followed the conventions in a similar way to produce a realistic outcome. This focused on a range of camera techniques to keep the audiences attention, examples of these angles include, close up shots, low and high shots. After analysing other music videos, it concluded, many used a narrative following a story line expressing the lyrics of the songs. It was discovered, real music videos, in the alternative rock genre focus on the band, lip syncing to the song as the shots flick between the band and the narrative. In this way, we have followed the conventions used in various music videos.
In ways our media product challenges the forms and conventions of a real music product, when producing the final video, we added a a vintage theme, which is not specifically related to a rock genre, however, when experimenting with this, it was discovered that the saturated edit works along side the song and lyrics. Using studio lighting that flashes in parts of the filming fits with the chosen edit, creating a flash back effect, introducing the love story with the female interacting with the camera when filming. This particular style of having the female, Abbie, looking at the camera in the park, gives the effect that she is talking to the main band singer. Having Abbie talking to the camera also anchors and incorporates the audience, also known as breaking the forth wall. This goes against common conventions of a music video as the narrative rarely interacts with the audience.
Following forms and conventions, the filming of the band was set on a stage against a black background, the instruments where arranged so they were all visible in the camera shot, the actors were given specific positions to stand, giving the effect that the band was at a concert. Following the codes and conventions of real music videos, our product includes a narrative within the video reflecting the lyrics, creating a love story which can be relatable to target audiences.
Evaluation- Feedback

Text Shown on prezi:
From our audience feedback, we learnt that our music video is suitable fit for purpose as the clips are interesting, keeping the audiences attention, we discovered that the music video suits the genre and target audience of 16-30 year olds. By having a modern song, our audience believed it would appeal to a wider range of audiences.
After the audience watched our video, they concluded that our target audience would be from the ages of 14-35. This was because the original band, Kings of Leon are quite an old band known by generations, this was also concluded as the music video would be suitable for all audiences.
From the feedback, the audience believe the narrative is based on 'the girl' presenting a love story about a relationship between her and the lead singer. It was also noticed that there is a connection between the clips showing the female, Abbie and the lyrics. Feedback which was also given, discussed it would be nice to see more of a love story between the couple and what they were like together to present an obviously clear narrative.
In regards to the genre our audience agreed the video, related and reflected a true, alternative/indie rock genre. This was shown in the live band parts of the video as this is commonly seen in professional videos.
The favourite parts noticed by the audience giving feedback was the style of the scene with Abbie, interacting with the camera, involving the audience along with the added layered effects, camera angles, characters and storyline.
Evaluation- How Effective
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
Through a number of media platforms, our product will be identifiable to the audience making our main product effective. Our main product will be identifiable to the target audience as it includes main codes and conventions, noticeable in professional music videos. We have used various media platforms to promote our product, these being social networking sites, websites and the digipak presenting forms of advertising.
Using ancillary texts of the website, poster and digipack, combined with the main product of a music video has been effective, as it reflects what would be presented in the music industry. Posters and adverts are often used to make the band identifiable to the audience, making them feel involved. When creating these forms of ancillary products, it was important to uses the research gathered when researching into the genre of alternative rock to suit the chosen song used in our music video and consider the target audience.
In the digipack, a CD cover was created, the image shown was taken when filming. The image shows the band posing together holding each of their instruments, linking back to the main product, the combination of the two helps represent the band. Using the stereotypical rock genre colours of black, white and red, these have been shown to represent the band, The New Age. The colour of red is stereotypically representative of a rock genre as it promotes danger and love, often associated with the genre of music.
In regards to the website, the audience is able to identify The New Age band, as it includes images and the colours which represent the band and gives an impression of the chosen genre. Using a website is an effective way of combining the product with the audience as it is accessible a single device, such as an iPhone which is a common way of accessing information used by the target audience.
